Wedding Transportation

Follow these useful tips to ensure you get to your wedding on time and in style!

Transport to the Wedding Venue
The bridesmaids and the bride's mother should be the first to leave for the ceremony.
The bride and her father will follow later, arriving as the ceremony is due to start!
It is the best man's responsibility to get himself and the groom to the church on time - it is his main responsibility. The ideal time to arrive is about thirty minutes before the ceremony is due to start.

From the Wedding Venue to the Reception
The wedding car should be waiting to take the bride and her groom to the reception.
Transport for the parents, grandparents, close/immediate family of the bride and groom- this could be hire cars or their own transport.
It is essentially the responsibility of the Best Man and the Ushers to ensure all the guests can get to the reception.

After the Reception
Traditionally the bride and groom leave the reception in a car that has been decorated with balloons, tin cans and the essential just 'married sign'. It would be a good idea to arrange before hand for a sober friend or relative to drive the bride and groom to their destination or alternatively hire a car with driver..
Nowadays many couples decide to spend their wedding night in the hotel of their reception and leave for their honeymoon the next morning.
If you are leaving the reception by taxi or mini-cab it should be booked in plenty of time before the wedding day, especially if you need to get to a particular place before a certain time.
The distance of your journey, the route you must take and the weather will influence your type of transport. Bear these things in mind when making a decision:
• How many cars will you need?
• What colour do you want?
• Do you need a chauffeur?
• Do you want the transport decorated?
• Will you need the car to take you to your first night destination?

Book as early as possible and get confirmation in writing.

Making Your Entrance
Any performer will tell you that the entrance sets up the occasion. Your choice of wedding transport for that last journey as a single girl isn't only about being roomy and reliable: it's about you and the style of your wedding. It could be as romantic as a glass coach drawn by a pair of horses or as informal as a black cab. Whatever you choose the leisurely drive from home to the church works wonders in settling nerves as your attention is taken with the waves and good wishes of passing motorists.

Types of Transport

Horse and Carriage
Horse drawn carriages are very romantic and are a definite crowd puller. The most practical carriages for weddings are landaus or Victoria's which have hoods for protection on rainy days. The horses should be elegant, stylish, well mannered and presented to perfection. They are not suitable for long journeys or journeys involving steep hills as they are quite slow.

The cost of hiring a horse and carriage varies greatly from company to company. However you can expect to pay between £350 and £500 for a single horse and carriage and £550 to £800 for a pair. As with car hire, you can expect to pay more for a Saturday wedding during the peak season (June to September).

Cars
If coaches have the romance of the past, so to do vintage limousines. Large and imposing they are guaranteed to be eye-catching and make a good backdrop for photographs. Landaulets are particularly suitable since the back roof folds very easily if the weather changes. Hiring this type of car may require a bit of phoning around, as they are generally only available from specialist companies. Some vintage car enthusiasts will hire their cars out and perform the role of the chauffeur themselves.

Classic cars are equally eye-catching. The limousines of the 50's and 60's have a character and individuality that modern car designs are losing. Maintained by enthusiasts they offer elegance and individuality.

Modern bridal cars are mainly Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Daimler limousines and perhaps the larger Mercedes Saloons. They come in a variety of sizes and colours. While white, silver and ivory are popular for weddings, dark blue, green and burgundy cars are increasingly popular and give a strong contrast against white and ivory dresses in the wedding photographs.

Flights of Fancy
If you fancy dropping in to you're wedding in style and having a bit of fun at the same time, you may find that hiring a helicopter is a great option. You will need to check with the venue first to ensure that they have a safe landing area and of course get permission first.

Helicopter charter companies charge for the time the helicopter is in the air. Expect to pay about £600 pounds per hour with a minimum charge of one hour. As a start to your honeymoon what could be more romantic than soaring off into the sunset.

Walking
If you are lucky enough to live near to the venue where your ceremony will take place it might be a nice idea to walk to your wedding, or from the bridal party to the reception with new husband and bridal party in procession. Not only will it give you a chance to relax, it will provide a wonderful spectacle for your friends and neighbours.

Boats
If your wedding or reception is going to take place near a river or lake it might be a nice idea to use a boat at some point as transport, whether it be to the ceremony or onwards to your reception.

Imaginative ideas
For the less conventional brides, why not consider a black cab, a Harley Davidson Motorbike, a shocking pink Cadillac, a hot air ballon, or on horse back- the list is just use your imagination.
