The Cost Of Getting Married

£17,249 is the average cost of a wedding according to a new national reader survey released by You & Your Wedding magazine. The results show that the cost of getting married has increased by 58% in the last 10 years. In this nation-wide survey You & Your Wedding magazine looks at every aspect of weddings from engagements to honeymoons, researching and detailing the habits of brides and grooms throughout the country. And it is not just celebrities who are splashing out this year, You & Your Wedding found that with more and more people deciding to tie the knot, marriage is definitely back in fashion and brides and grooms-to-be are spending more than ever before.

Findings include:

• 51% of couples will be opting for a traditional religious ceremony.
• The most expensive items for the big day are the reception (£6,076) and the honeymoon (£2,857).
• The average engagement lasts 14 months.
• The average cost of a wedding in 1994 was £10,917.
• 46% of couples will be having over 100 guests for their special day.
• Organisation and money are the biggest sources of stress when planning a wedding.
66% of readers are planning a gift list, the average cost of which is £1,642.
• Couples are exceeding all budgets for that special day. The average original wedding budget is only £11,000, more than £6,000 lower than the final total spend.
• 45% of You & Your Wedding readers will be taking out wedding insurance.
• The average age of a bride is 28 and the average age of a groom 30.
• 86% of brides will be adopting their husband’s name once married.

Carole Hamilton, editor of You & Your Wedding says, “Whether it’s wedding dresses, flowers or stationary, You & Your Wedding found that people are happily splashing out more than ever before on their weddings. Our survey shows that marriage has never been more fashionable or more expensive, and people are voting with their wallets and prioritising their special day”. “The business of marriage is booming and this coupled with the recent spree of celebrity engagements is sure to make it a great year for weddings.”

Figures have been taken from the 2005 National Magazine Company 'You & Your Wedding' annual survey.
