Here are some useful tips to help ensure that you end up with a honeymoon you'll both be thrilled with:
• Decide who is going to book the honeymoon. Many couples organise it together, but tradition dictates this is the man's job.
• If it's going to be a surprise, do think carefully about what your partner would want.
If your opinions differ markedly as to what constitutes the perfect holiday, plan a two-centred honeymoon with something for you both.
• Make sure you agree on the fundamentals - hot or cold - and the things she wants to avoid - injections, spiders, or a long flight for example.
• If you're used to travelling you might find a luxurious beach holiday gets very dull after two weeks so check with the hotel or travel agent to find out exactly what leisure facilities and cultural diversions are available should you get bored of the bedroom or beach.
• If you've booked an active honeymoon, ensure you plan yourself time to rest and relax during the first few days (for example, lying on a beach, or holed up in a mountain hideaway).
• Pick somewhere neither of you has visited before, as there's nothing more tedious than being given a blow-by-blow account of a holiday a partner enjoyed or didn't enjoy, with someone else!
• Some countries require proof of citizenship or visas so check early as these can take months to arrange.
• If your tickets and passport are under different names, take your wedding certificate along to the airport, or have your passport changed into your married name three months before the trip.
• Book as early as possible because the best rooms, views and deals always go first.
Planning Your Itinerary
It's tempting to pack as much as you can into your honeymoon, but remember that less can be more. Here are some points to consider when planning your honeymoon itinerary...
• Avoid overnight stops while travelling to your honeymoon destination because this will make the journey feel longer and more tiring. Go straight to your destination, if possible on one direct flight
• Consider that you will almost certainly be very tired after the all the work and excitement of planning the wedding and from the big day itself. Even if you are going off to do some touring, it is sensible to spend at least a few days doing nothing somewhere relaxing at the beginning of your honeymoon
• If you want to learn to scuba dive together during your honeymoon, do the pool work and theory at home before you go so that you can get straight to the fun bits when you're on honeymoon
• If you want to go on a boat or cruise trip during your honeymoon, choose an overnight cruise or one that only lasts a couple of nights rather than a week afloat, unless you are really sure that you like communal living
• Choose private transfers over public transport, particularly when you arrive at your honeymoon destination.
It is so much more relaxing to be met and whisked straight off to your hotel than to fight off a crowd of taxi drivers competing for your business, or worse still, haul your suitcases on to the airport bus
